Tips to SEO Optimize Blogger Blog

Although Blogger is a free blogging platform, and the ability to SEO optimize a Blogger Blog is not immediately obvious, there are several ways to SEO optimize your Blogger blog. Today I am going to discuss 10 different ways you can SEO optimize your Blogger blog, and the best part is, there is very little HTML coding involved! So even beginner bloggers can implement these easy SEO tips!

10 Ways to SEO Optimize Your Blogger Blog

1. Keyword Research

Using a keyword research tool will help you better understand what keywords people recently searched for. As a blogger, you want to know what keywords are popular and fresh. Once you have decided what keywords you want to use in your article, make sure you include your keywords in the title and post content. Be sure to use your keywords or phrases in relevant areas of your article and avoid using terms such as, "it, they, them" when referring to your keywords. Your article must read well and you should never "stuff" keywords to manipulate the search engines.

2. Format Your Post Permalinks

Permalinks have a big impact on the search engine ranking of your post. Here are a couple of tips you should follow for Blogger permalinks:

  • Limit the number of characters in a permalink to 50
  • Your permalink should always include the keywords or phrase
  • Remove "stop" words such as "a, and, the" from the permalink

When writing your blog post in Blogger, you have the option to change the permalink. In the right side panel, under "Post settings", click permalink. You are given two options: "Automatic Permalink" and "Custom Permalink". If you need to remove stop words or add keywords, simply select "Custom Permalink" and change the permalink to suit your needs.

3. Format Your Blogger Post Page Titles

Your post title is also a very important element in the search engine ranking. By default, your Blogger template displays your Blogger blog's title in front of each page or post. For example: "Your Blog Name: Your Blog Post Title". Instead, you will want it to read, "Your Blog Post Title | Your Blog Name". The reason for switching the post title, is because people are more likely to search for specific content versus the actual name of your blog. This will increase your chance of being found in the search results.

In order to switch the post title, you will need to edit a little HTML. Below are the steps to easily edit the HTML.

From your Blogger Dashboard, go to "Template" >> Click "Edit HTML"

Find the following code in your Blogger template:

<title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title>

Replace the above code with this code:

<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "item"'>
<title><data:blog.pageName/> | <data:blog.title/></title>
<b:else/>
<title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title> </b:if>

Preview to make sure there are no errors, then save!

4. Image Optimization

To optimize blog post images, use descriptive image names that contain post keywords or phrases. Once you have uploaded your blog post image to Blogger, utilize the "Alt" and "Title" tags to add relevant keywords and an SEO friendly description to your image.

5. Internal Linking

Optimize your Blogger blog by linking relevant keywords to other posts you have already written. Avoid linking terms such as, "click here" or "this post from last week", instead link relevant keywords from your previous posts. Internal linking will help increase page views and search engine ranking.

6. Nofollow External Links

If linking to external sites in your blog posts, make sure these links are "nofollow". Nofollow is an HTML attribute specified on hyperlinks to prevent search engines from following the links to external sites. When adding a link to your blog post, simply check the "nofollow" attribute to make external links nofollow.

7. Use Blogger Labels

Using Blogger labels not only helps categorize relevant posts but it can also add to your keyword use. If you use broad categories to categorize posts, you might want to consider widening your labels to include more specific keywords or phrases.

8. Add Related Posts

Adding a related posts gadget to your posts will not only increase your page views but can also increase your on page SEO, especially if the related posts are relevant to the current post and use similar keywords or phrases.

9. Improve Your Blogger Blog's Load Time

If your blog is slow loading, chances are visitors will leave and never look back. This increases your bounce rate and will cause you to lose traffic. Track down what's causing the increased load time, whether it's a gadget, your template, or an ad network, and either determine a way to reduce the effect it has on your blog's load time, or remove it completely.

10. Use the Comment Section

This might sound irrelevant, but make use of your comment section for SEO! When replying to reader comments, use your post's keywords or phrases. You might also want to make sure your comment section is moderated to avoid spam comments.
